Scratch Board Art Turtle (November 2017)-
For this project, we were asked to select an image off of the internet that displayed a wide variety of textures and values. I chose a turtle because of their complex range of textures on the shell and body.
Black and White Geometric and Organic Shape Drawing (pencil) October 2017-
During this project, we were asked to pick an organic shape and geometric shape. For my geometric shape, I chose to draw rectangles of all sizes. I drew shapes with squiggly edges for my organic shapes. After drawing the shapes, I went in and shaded each of them using different values (dark to light or light to dark, etc.)

Hand Value Study Sketchbook Assignment (Pencil) September 2017-
This drawing represents my hand in 2 different and basic positions. I used a full range of values to create shadows and highlights.

Zen Tangle (Pen & Watercolor) September 2017-
this was by far one of my favorite projects of the semester! I´ve always had interest in the stars, moon, and sun. The inside of the circle represents the moon and the outside represents the sun (the petals represent the rays of the sun). This project took a lot of focus and patience.

Word Art (Pen) December 2017-
This is our most recent project and again one of my favorites. We were asked to choose a picture that provoked emotion. I chose an image of John Lennon holding up a peace sign. I am such a strong believer in peace and have always loved this photograph. After tracing the photograph onto a separate piece of paper, I went back in and filled the image with words or phrases that connected to the image. Some of the words and phrases I used were equality, peace, music genius, and give peace a chance.

Zen Tangle Clay Tile (Clay, Paint, and Colored Pencil) October 2017-
This clay tile pairs with my zen tangle drawing and was heavily influenced by that drawing. We first took a drawing and traced it onto a clay tile. After this, we dripped it in a black liquid and went over it with a white liquid. After this, we were asked to add color

Wooden Mannequin Sketchbook Assignment (pencil) November 2017-
This drawing was one of the sketchbook assignments that I chose to draw at home. I used a wooden mannequin that I have at home and situated its arms and legs in different positions to make the drawing more interesting and advanced. After drawing the outline of the figure, I went back in and added rough marks to create value and shadows.
Sphere Value Drawing (pencil) October 2017-
One of the techniques that we, as a class, have been focusing on is value/shadow. This drawing captures use of a wide range of values, shadows, and highlights. By using light and dark shades, I was able to create shadows and a more realistic drawing.
Color Scheme Sketchbook Assignment (colored pencil) October 2017-
This drawing and the one above it represent the monochromatic color scheme because the colors used (red, yellow, and orange) are similar and in the same family. I used a leaf from a tree in my yard as inspiration because the colors were closely related.

Tempera Paint Self Portrait Painting March 2018 (18 in x 20 in)-
This painting was based off a photograph of me taken at the beginning of the second semester. For this project, you were able to make either a realistic or non realistic painting-I chose to paint an unrealistic painting as you can see by the colors I used. I captured highlights (lighter colors) and shadows with the darker colors of paint.

Pointillism Self Portrait April 2018 (8 in x 10 in water color and ink)-
Like the one above, this drawing was based off of a photograph of me from the beginning of the second semester. I copied the photograph of me onto a piece of transparent paper by using a light source. Then, I created shadow and highlight by using dots-the closer together the dots were the darker the value was and vice versa. Lastly, I painted the background with water color and cut the image of me out with an exato-knife and glued it onto the background. This artwork was more challenging than others because I also cut the matt board needed to mount my artwork on.

Linocut Block/Stamp May 2018 (4 in x 6 in)-
The drawing on the right was used as the plan for my final linocut print and was based off of a photograph that I took of flowers in Santa Fe. I then copied the image onto the block and started to carve at the block. The black parts would be the parts that would be black on the print and the "grey" parts showed up white on the paper.

Black and White Linocut Print May 2018 (4 in x 6 in ink)-
Mrs.Sawyer asked each student to print a clean black and white print. My favorite parts of this print are the bees and the insides of the flowers, I think they gave them a more advanced look.

Linocut Print with Modified Background May 2018 (4 in x 6 in ink and tissue paper)-
In addition to a black and white print, we were each asked to print onto a modified background. I decided to use pink, orange, and red tissue paper for my background. I tore off pieces of the tissue paper, glued them onto a blank piece of paper, and then printed onto the tissue paper. I really like the finished product of this one!

Bubblegum Spaceship Sketchbook Assignment January 2018 (8 in x 10 in water color and marker)-
This was my favorite sketchbook assignment because you could interpret a bubblegum spaceship in so many different ways. I used water color on the spaceship and markers for the planets. The planets are pieces of hubba bubba gum.

Ribbon, Rope, Modified Sphere, and Modified Cube January 2018 (8 in x 10 in pencil)-
This was a fun sketchbook assignment that we did in class one day. The top drawing is a bent ribbon, the next is a rope, the third is a modified sphere that is broken into pieces, and the last is a cube that is supposed to look "bent."

"Dream a Little Dream of Me" Sketchbook Assignment March 2018 (8 in x 10 in pencil and ink)-
This semester Ms.Sawyer gave us a new type of list of sketchbook assignments to choose from. One of the choices on there was "Dream a Little Dream of Me." I drew the top of a young girls head with her closed eyes and drew a thought bubble coming off of her saying "dream a little dream of me. I had a fun and challenging time creating these sketchbook assignments because you could interpret the title in so many different and unique ways.

"You are my Sunshine" Sketchbook Assignment April 2018 (8 in x 10 in pencil and ink)-
When I heard these words I thought of the song ("you are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me smile when skies are blue...") Then I thought of a mom and daughter because the daughter might look at the mom as inspiration and as a way to smile. Therefore, I drew a mom and daughter with the sun shining on them. Then I drew a bubble with the mom singing the song to her daughter.

Glue Line Drawing May 2018 (12 in x 18 in glue and oil pastel)-
This was one of the most recent projects we created and one of my most favorites. I got inspiration and based my artwork off of a mask that Ms.Sawyer had in her room. Then, I drew lines through the drawing to create barriers and various sections. These sections would allow me to create a contrast of colors. I enjoyed this project because I loved using pastels. You could create so many different textures by using your fingers!

Vanitas September 2018 (8"x 6.5") in paint and colored pencil)-
This project was new but very interesting. The word vanitas was one that I did not know when we began this project. A vanitas is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of death. It is very similar to a still life. For this project, we chose many objects and then took a picture of them and then painted it. I chose a skull, painting, and flowers to focus on. I had a hard time showing shadows because I painted onto a black background but I like how this turned out because the colors look good all together.

Foil Relief Project October 2018 (6"x 6") in glue, tissue paper, foil, sharpie, graphite)
This was a very fun project to participate in. There was a lot to the process. First you covered a piece of mat board in glue and laid a Kleenex over it. Then you cut out any shapes and glued on top of this surface. Next you laid tin foil over the top of it and then went over the tin foil with an eraser to help the shapes below the tin foil stand out. Lastly, you went over this surface with a dull pencil and then sharpie. To give the tinfoil an older and worn look, you went over the surface with steel wool. One of the harder parts of this project was finding objects that were thick enough so they would still stand out even when there was tin foil covering the whole board. I really liked the final product- my favorite part are the spirals.

Natural Figures Observational Drawing September 2018 (17"x 24")in graphite and water/watercolor)-
For this project, Mrs.Sawyer asked that we observed some natural figures that she brought in from her house/yard. I chose to observe a gourd. I think that I captured the outside shape of this object but next time, I want to improve the background and shadows. This was a quick project but I enjoyed it.

Paper bag Still life September 2018 (12"x 18")graphite)-
This was an exercise that challenged each artists ability to recreate what they observe and capture different shadows and values. Many people crinkled the bag so it was more interesting and there would be more shadows. I chose to leave it pretty simple. After setting up the bag, each person took a picture. One thing that I found helpful was converting the picture to black and white because it better captured shadows and highlights. I like how this turned out because I succeeded at emphasizing different values, shadows, and highlights and I believe that this looks pretty realistic which was a goal of mine during this project.

Sketchbook Assignment ("Prisoner") October 2018 (5.5"x 8.5") ink and graphite)-
This year, we have different type of sketchbooks to complete. By the end of the year, it should showcase a dramatic progress of skills. I really hope that by the end of the year my portraits and facial features improve and become more realistic. Each assignment you turn in has to include some sort of a portrait but must connect to the theme either figuratively or realistically. For this project I took more of a realistic approach and put myself in a jail cell to represent feeling trapped or imprisoned. I like how this turned out but overall this year, I would like to spend more time and put more dedication into my sketchbook assignments each week.

Skeleton October 2018 paint and graphite (5.5"x 8.5")
I always look forward to Halloween in this art class because Ms.Sawyer always brings in skeletons from the science department at our school and we get to focus on certain parts of the skeleton to draw. This year, I chose to focus on the ribs and arm/shoulder bone of the skeleton. I really like how this turned out and I am very proud of it! My favorite parts are the flowers and black background. I like how the colors are the only colorful piece of this art and I like the black background because it helps the parts of the skeleton to really stand out. Next time, I would like to advance my shadows, shading, and use of range of value.

The Game of Life October 2018 paint and ink (11"x 11")
For this project we were asked to remember a game that we played growing up or a game that could connect to life and the lessons you learn in life. Growing up, Candy land was one of my most favorite games because I loved candy and therefore loved how gumdrops and lollipops were incorporated into the game. At first I had a hard time starting this project because I was unsure how I was going to incorporate parts of the game into the artwork without having it look too much like the game board. I have always loved zen tangles so I incorporated this skill into my artwork by making the stems of the lollipops have small black detail. Also, when I look at my artwork, I feel like one of the focal points is the hand because the black and white detail is such a large contrast to the rest of the piece.

(Sketchbook Assignment (Black and White, Loss and Deceit) November 2018 Ink (5.5" x 8.5")
This semester I have found challenges when making sketchbook assignments because the topics are so broad and open to so much interpretation. However, I really liked this sketchbook entry because I believe that it looks very clean and organized. I really enjoy smaller and more detailed pen drawings so I enjoyed this assignment and I am happy with the outcome. First, I found a circular object to trace. The yin yang symbol came into my mind when first creating this and that's how I originally split the circle. Then I added circles as a way to incorporate the idea of a portrait into my drawing.

Unusual Viewpoint November/December 2018 Watercolor, charcoal, and graphite (10" x 13")
This drawing was based off of a photograph that I took of my friend Claudia. We were asked to take this photo from a different/unusual viewpoint and therefore I decided to take this photo of Claudia from the ground. The first step for this project was creating a grid over the photograph and then creating a grid with a bigger scale on a larger piece of paper. This was done so the drawing on the larger paper would look similar/normal enlarged. This is a very helpful technique because it helps you focus on lines, one box at a time. Finally, I painted the background a light blue as a way to represent the sky. I would've liked to spend more time on this part but overall I really like how this turned out!

"The Color Red" Sketchbook Assignment December 2018 (paper/pieces of magazines)
This was a favorite sketchbook assignment because I was able to create a collage of red things. For this project, I looked through magazines for red things and tore them out. Then, I arranged them in a cool and interesting way. I like how this turned out because I really enjoy to create collages.

South High Artwork February 2019 (charcoal) (8" x 13")
This was such a fun project to work on because our school has such beautiful and intricate architecture. Architecture has always been something that I take interest in so this was definitely a favorite project of mine. At first, I had a hard time to find what to focus on and draw but then I found a beautiful window and door in the courtyard. I also had a fun time making sure to emphasize the value by using shadows and highlights. I really like how this piece came out.

Intuitive Painting February 2019 acrylic paint (24" x 14")
This project was such a stress relieving and great thing to do! I liked that there weren't a ton of rules because it made it even more individualistic. Firstly, we painted the whole canvas with warm colors and then went back in with cool colors. After that, I was able to go back over and add in any shapes or new colors. I think this looks a little crazy and all over the place but I also really like that part of it and I think this turned out quite good!

March 2019 Tempera Resist Painting (tempera paints and ink) (8" x 13")
The process of this project was incredibly fun and exciting to learn about and learn how to do. First, I drew the shapes that I wanted to be shown in this piece so I made triangles with rounded bottoms. I also added in a swirly line on the top of my painting and I think it was one of the more interesting parts of this piece. Next, I chose to have a bright color palette and so I painted in each triangle and shape. I really like the colors that I chose. Finally, I covered the painting with black ink. This was a little bit scary because it seemed like it would never go back to being bright. Then I applied water to the top to help get the ink off. In the end, I wanted to exaggerate the black lines so after letting it dry and went back in with a sharpie. I really really like how this piece turned out and I liked the colors.

Pen and Ink Drawing January 2019- ink (4" by 4")
This was part of a really neat project that actually got submitted to a district art show and we actually won an award for it! This was a fun project to work on because I liked how small of a paper I was able to work on. I think there are some parts that I could've worked on for a longer amount of time (like the left cheek bone) but I like how it turned out and I'm quite proud of this. I focused on creating different values and I think I ended up doing a pretty good job of doing that.

Collage Project (Christine Kim) April 2019-charcoal and water color (12"x 13")
I really really loved how this turned out and this final product is probably the one that I am most proud of. I love the butterfly and really enjoyed shading and working on it. I think the butterfly is the focal point of this project but I also liked my color scheme of this project. I am really proud of this and really liked how it turned out.

Linocut Block May 2019 - ink and carving tool (6" x 10")
This was a really fun project that I actually also got to try last year. At first, I had a hard time figuring out what I would use as a reference but I really like how the bee and hexagons turned out. I think this looks especially neat with the black ink in contrast to the grey on the linocut block.

Linocut Print May 2019 - ink and carving tool and paper (6" x 10")
I think that this turned out pretty cool but next time I would apply a little more ink to make some areas darker. I also think think there were some places where I should have cut away more to exaggerate shapes or lines such as the wings. My favorite part of these are the hexagons because they give this a more interesting part to look at and focus on.

For this, I decided to add something more interesting to the paper. I found a very neat piece of paper in the art room that had a design that looked like crystals. I applied this by using gloss medium. After that, I printed the linocut right onto the top. I actually this is very interesting and unique and I think it would be neat to go in with a white sharpie to exaggerate certain parts.

Sketchbook Assignment (charcoal) January 2019 (8.5" x 11")
I have always taken interest in architecture and especially modern houses. I actually really love how this turned out and am encouraging myself to draw more houses because I really enjoyed this and is something that could interest me in the future.

Sketchbook Assignment (charcoal) February 2019 (8.5" x 11")
Similar to above, I decided to draw another modern house with a strong focus on value and shadows. I think this turned out great and I really love having the freedom to decide what to draw for sketchbooks because you can practice things that interest you like I did for this!
