This has been of my favorite classes by far to have during my first year at South. I have always grown up surrounded by a family of artists-my mom is an art teacher, my sister went to Denver School of the Arts, and my grandparents have always been very involved in the arts. Therefore, art has always been very prominent in my life. I have enjoyed art classes and made sure that I'm enrolled in at least one art class at school a year, I love going to art camps at the Denver Art Museum, and I love to doodle and complete small art projects when I'm at home. I live in such a beautiful place and am able to use my surroundings as inspiration. Additionally, a few of my artworks have been based off of personal opinions and thoughts as a way to express myself. One of these artworks was my word drawing of John Lennon holding a peace sign from last semester. This drawing was based off of my strong belief in peace. This year at South has been full of trying new things both inside and outside of the art class. Recently, we completed a print which was something I had never done before. I found this project very challenging because we had to curve away things on a block which required a lot of effort and focus. Additionally, I found the pointillism portrait challenging because it was difficult to make it difficult to make it realistic and was hard to create shadows and highlights with dots. Lastly, I found the tempura paint portrait challenging because it was hard to create a realistic and detailed outcome with paint. Although I found these projects challenging, it helped me grow as an artist because now I feel more comfortable to go outside my comfort zone and try new things in the art room. I have become better at creating value and using a variety of materials. I am hoping to take more art classes as an artist and am very excited for my future as an artist. DRAWING AND PAINTING 3 QUARTER 1 REFLECTION AND GOALS: After completing your reflection rubric, please write about an area of success about your working habits in the studio for the past quarter below: I worked hard, completed each assignment, and had a hard work ethic. I made sure to continue working even when I felt most challenged. After completing your reflection rubric, please write a goal about your working habits in the studio for the next quarter below: I want to continue to work and not get behind. I would like to try to spend more time and more thought and effort into my sketchbook assignments. After completing your reflection rubric, please write about an area of success about developing your art skills for this past quarter below: I tried my best to apply new techniques even when I felt challenged. Some of the types of techniques that I tried to incorporate were shadows, texture, and variety. After completing your reflection rubric, please write a goal about developing your art skills for next quarter below: Next quarter, I would like to try my best to convey issues and more feelings into my artwork so that I make the person that is viewing my artwork have more of connection to it. I think that it is important to include some sort of emotional feeling in your artwork. DRAWING AND PAINTING 3 QUARTER TWO REFLECTIONS AND GOALS: (December 2018) I learned how to use a couple new tools during this semester. For example, I learned how to use charcoal in my most recent artwork (unusual viewpoint) and I learned that just a little bit of charcoal goes a very long way (you can use tools like blenders to carry out the value). I also learned about a very helpful technique: drawing grids. This technique is most helpful when it comes to enlarging an image and I found this most helpful on the unusual viewpoint drawing because you had to draw a picture very realistically and transfer it onto a larger piece of paper. The grid helped me to focus on smaller parts of the drawing and perfect it. I applied/attempted new techniques and tried my hardest to make connections to other artwork and outside experiences. In many pieces of my artwork, I attempted/applied my personal interests within the world to my art as a way to show my curiosities, interests, and passions. Also, before I began each project, I made sure to think through each part and become more aware of what I wanted to accomplish for the final product. I tried my hardest to commit and follow through with my original thoughts even when I felt most frustrated and challenged. I incorporate interests such as zen tangles, candy, fashion, mountains, and other things into my artwork and especially in my sketchbook assignments. Next semester, I would like to a better job of showing moods and feelings to the viewers because I believe that is an area that I can become more advanced in. I believe that I spent some time observing my subject matter , art making process and/or the environment around me that I may have otherwise missed. However, I also believe that this is an area of reflection that I can become better and grow in. I believe that my artworks have been well organized and clean. Additionally, they have been well thought out and it seems obvious to me that I have put a lot of thought and effort into creating them. I feel like this can be most shown in my unusual viewpoint especially. I believe that I need to start more thought and time into my sketchbooks however. I took risks such as using new materials (charcoals and paints). I also believe that I took risks when drawing certain things that I was scared to draw because I thought the final product would not be/look how I had envisioned it. I spent a small amount of time examining others artworks and would like to become better at doing this for next semester. Overall, I am proud of what I have accomplished this semester but there are still some things that require some areas of growth. Second Semester Sophomore Year Reflection: The second semester of sophomore year was filled with projects that I loved and forced me to go out of my comfort zone. I learned many new techniques that I have grown to love and will continue to use for many years in the future. I got to experiment and try out new types of projects that may have felt not so confident using before. This year, I have learned that you can have a great result from doing unusual things that you may have not always thought of doing. Also, I loved having freedom in many of the projects that we did and especially in the sketchbook assignments. This semester, I was able to continue my love and grow and find even more interest in houses and architecture. This semester, I had so much fun working with charcoal. I learned that just them tiniest bit of charcoal can go a long way! I also learned that there is white charcoal which I found very useful in artworks such as my shell drawing, my butterfly, and my drawing from an unusual viewpoint. I also got to use charcoal in my two sketchbooks of houses and found that charcoal was helpful when creating shadows and a full range of values. One tool that really helped me to spread the charcoal and create value was the blending tool and I really learned to love this tool-it came in handy many times. I also found that I love to make collages and found that the collage artwork was one of my favorites. I love being able to put all types of things together to make one artwork-watercolor, charcoal, paper, etc. I think that I have grown as an artist- I have become more advanced within creating shadows and using a full range of value, I have gone out of my comfort zone and tried new things, and so much more. For future years, I want to take more time to make art outside of class and take my time on certain projects. I have really enjoyed yet another semester of art at South and I can't wait to make more art. |
